Panzer Campaigns Orel '43 - Breakthroughs Without the Tears

Panzer Campaigns Orel '43

This scenario portrays the offensive of the Russian 63th Army in the southernmost edge of the Bryansk Front. The objective is to break through the German defenses in a sector defended by General Rendulic's  XXXV.ArmeeKorps. It is one bonus scenarios that were deployed along the latest patch for Orel '43.

Not the strongest of the German defenses, but it is not short of obstacles and minefields controlled by the fields of fire from the Germans entrenched on the hills.

Since I started playing Panzer Campaigns I was of the practice of first moving the engineers to clear a path so the infantry could move into contact during the next turn and assault the enemy defenses. It was a long and gruesome process, engineers would get disrupted and not clear the humblest of obstacles or minefields. When lucky, I would get the infantry forward just to, in turn, get disrupted and unable to assault. Massive casualties mounted.

As of late, I have been amassing all the troops needed for the obstacle clearance and assault during a single turn. The resulting hex is an enemy fire magnet and moving troops into minefields is not devoid of simulated cruelty. But it gets the job done. The next turn I'm assaulting with good results.

In this screenshot, engineer units are highlighted with a red/yellow border. Note the selected hex, with one engineer company and everybody else getting ready to face the monster.

At Khoteyevo (north extreme of this screenshot), the breakthrough was clean and the Germans are being pushed to the East.

Needless to say, abundant air support (IL-2s are great!) and indirect fire are crucial to accomplish this. To make the clicking less aggravating, I make extensive use of this game tool (see below). This tool is available in the AI menu. Just make sure you push the "Indirect Fire" button otherwise all your eligible units will spend their action points.

Breakthroughs without the tears. Mine at least, my soldiers have a different opinion.

Cheers,
