REPOST: What if they gave a war and nobody came?

This blog has been around for a while. Some of the posts were and are more popular than others. It would be a pity for some of the new readers not to get a chance to read those posts. In that spirit, time by time, I'm going to be re-posting some of the oldies. Be advised, some of them are quite old and may contain inaccuracies, grammar and spelling errors.

I learnt the names of every wood and all the villages, I knew the contours of the hills and the shapes of the lakes in the valley. To see so much and to see nothing. We might have been the only men alive, my two signalers and I. And yet I knew there were thousands of hidden men in front of me ... but no one moved, and everyone was waiting for the safety of darkness.

P. J. Campbell. British artillery officer during World War I.

After 40 minutes of Combat Mission PBEM simulated combat against my friend Olav, I feel the quote above puts it very well.

This is all I knew about the enemy during good part of the battle. Red question marks are suspected enemy positions. The absence of enemy icons reflects that no contact has been made. Click the image for an expanded view.

The modern battlefield is a very empty one.

Cheers,

CMANO - To Know Tactics, Know Technology

Please check out my latest video about learning tactics. I'm playing the Black Gold Blitz scenario from the Command Live series and I wanted to share some thoughts.

Kursk - Battle at Prochorovka - By Yobowargames

Finally got a chance to take a look at Kursk - Battle at Prochorovka, by Yobowargames.

This hexes and turns war game can be given the "lite" label because of the simple, no-fuss mechanics and game play.

Arma 3 - In Mods We Trust

I was browsing the Grogheads.com forum and I came upon a discussion thread about Arma 3 mods. Being the ultimate solo player that I am, I updated my library of Arma 3 mods based on the useful info on the forum thread. Thanks, Grogheads!

Panzer Battles North Africa - Wargame Design Studio Needs Your Input

The North Africa title is coming along very nicely, I can attest. Wargame Design Studio is working very hard on this title and you are in for a real treat when it is released.

The image above shows two alternative textures and colors that Wargame Design Studio has as candidates. They are asking for your feedback regarding terrain, water, buildings and shading for the maps. For a full description of the proposed changes, please take a look at this blog entry by David (head honcho of Wargame Design Studio) and join the discussion.

Cheers,

Military Operations: Benchmark - Have You Tried It?

The benchmark for this very promising PC war game that will bring WWII alive from Armies through Platoons has been released already.

From the early version of the benchmark that I showed you before, there have been plenty of optimizations and additions.

DCS F/A 18C - Video Briefing and Debriefing - Ground Attack Mission in Support of a Landing Force

I just uploaded a video about my mission. I'm not very fond of long videos, but let's see if I succeed in keeping you entertained for the duration of this one.

Both the briefing and the debriefing are included in the video. The DCS Hornet, even at this early stage, doesn't fail to keep me hooked. The sense of satisfaction after a recovery -even the not very best as shown in the video- is enormous.

I uploaded the Operation Surcrose scenario to SteelBeasts.com. Footage of this scenario's gameplay can be found in my previous videos. Please see below.

Graviteam Tactics: Tielieketi Incident - Chinese AT Teams

Before I embark in the campaign, I like to get familiar with the capabilities of the two factions of this DLC.

Today, the Chinese AT teams. Featuring two recoilless rifles and a heavy MG, I have them facing a Soviet column of APCs moving down a road.

Valor and Victory - Coming Q4 2018

This squad, tactical level computer war game has Advanced Squad Leader written all over it. And Storm Over Arnhem ... and Rommel's Panzers ... and Stalin's Tanks.
